CHENNAI, JULY 2. Centuries by Robin Singh for SICAL and Dinesh Kaarthick and Hemant Kumar for Globe Trotters marked the opening day's action in the three-day first round matches of the SPIC-TNCA first division league, which began at various venues here on Friday. On a day when the bat dominated the ball, Vasanth Saravanan of Jolly Rovers missed a century by seven runs (93, 169b, 16x4, 1x6), but his 131-run fourth-wicket stand with Vinay Kumar (58) helped the defending champion recover to 264 for five at stumps after Vijay, which opted to field, had reduced the opposition to 68 for three with some early strikes. Veteran Robin Singh's 138 (195b, 11x4, 4x6) and 174-run third-wicket stand with opener Ritesh Jaiswal (90, 210b, 6x4) powered SICAL, opting to bat, to 304 for five at stumps against IOB. Globe Trotters sent promoted side State Bank on a leather hunt, running up 398 for five declared on winning the toss. Kaarthick (135, 125b, 20x4, 2x6) and left-hander Vidyut (49) provided the side with a 153-run start while left-hander Kumar (112 not out, 165b, 12x4, 2x6) and Rajat Bhatia (37) put on 72 for the fifth wicket in quick time. At stumps, SBI was 39 without loss in reply.
