JAIPUR, JULY 4 . Karnataka swimmers claimed the overall championship title garnering 43 gold medals at the National junior aquatics which concluded at the Sawai Mansingh stadium here on Sunday. The southern state earned 661 points to emerge the clear winner and in the process won the team events in the boys' group I and girls' group I and II while Maharashtra, garnering 25 gold medals, was second with a distant 192 points, winning the team event in boys' group II section. The concluding day, however, belonged to the Maharashtra swimmers, who won eight gold, three silver and three bronze medals against Karnataka's six gold, eight silver and four bronze. Maharashtra swimmers Arjun Murlidharan and Aditya Sangwekar were declared best male swimmers in group I and group II category and C. Shubha of Karnataka and Aarti Ghorpade got the honour in girls' and group II events respectively. As many as 54 new records were created in the championship 29 in the boys' events and 25 in girls' events including Aniket D'souza's new mark in the boys' group I 100m freestyle, clocking 0.55.52 and Maharashtra's Aditya Sangvekar's record in the boys' group II 50m butterfly with a time of 0.28.50 on the last day. In water polo, West Bengal, Kerala and Maharashtra took the top three positions respectively in the boys' section while among girls Kerala, Karnataka and Maharashtra were the top three teams. Babu Naiya (West Bengal) and S. Nitha (Karnataka) were declared the best players in the boys' and girls' sections respectively.
