Pate takes lead into final round

EAST MEADOW (NEW YORK), JULY 4. Jerry Pate shot a 4-under 66 Saturday and took a two-stroke lead over Bobby Wadkins after two rounds of the Long Island Classic on the Champions Tour, the first time Pate has led a golf tournament going into the final round since the 1981 Pensacola Open.

``I'm fired up. The hardest thing is to be patient and not get emotional about playing again,'' said Pate, who birdied two of the final three holes for a 10-under 130.

Wadkins late flourish put him a tie with Wadkins, who capped his 68 with a double-bogey on the par-4 18th to drop back. — AP
