Age-related problems to the fore

CHENNAI, JULY 4. Age-related problems had an echo in the Krishna Khaitan memorial junior all-India badminton tournament on Sunday with parents of a few players in the Under-13 girls' category withdrawing their wards in protest over the participation of I.R.D. Sravani, who they claimed was "overaged" for the event.

But then the Andhra girl, who incidentally is the top seed, was armed with the Andhra High Court order directing the organisers to allow her to participate in the age group concerned.

In the event, competition in this section virtually came to a halt at the pre-quarterfinal stage. The beneficiaries because of the boycott were Sravani, Lavanya (AP) and S. Darsheen (TN) who all earned walk-overs. Laxmi Priyanka too just needed to warm up against Mansi Jain. She had to take part to ensure that her entry in the Under-10 did not get scratched in accordance with rules.

Meanwhile the pre-quarterfinals were completed in all other sections. A highlight of this phase was the ouster of Anshuman Hazarika of Assam (seeded in the top four) to a qualifier Kaushik Pal of West Bengal in the under-19 boys section.

In the girls' section, Anitha Ohlan of Haryana acounted for lower seeded Vaidehi Dave (Gujarat) while Aditi Mutatkar sent out her Maharashtra colleague Neha Rane another bottom seed.
