IOB lifts title

TIRUNELVELI, JULY 4. Indian Overseas Bank (Chennai) lifted the Kandasamy memorial trophy, defeating the defending champion Tamil Nadu Hockey Association Juniors team 4-2 via tie breaker in the final of the fourth annual State-level invitation hockey tournament at the VOC hockey stadium, Palayamkottai, here on Sunday.

Ganesh put Tamil Nadu juniors in the lead in the 27th minute, but in the 40th minute Saravanakumar scored the equaliser for IOB. In the tie breaker, Felix, Senthil and Arun Kumar scored for IOB and Johnson only scored for THA Juniors.

Earlier in the semifinals, a hat-trick by Anand helped Indian Overseas Bank score a 3-0 win over last year's runner-up Reserve Line Sports Club, Madurai. The THA Juniors prevailed over Indian Bank (Chennai) 4-3 via tie-breaker, after the teams were level 1-1 at the regulation time. Ganesh scored for juniors in the 32nd minute and Thirumavalavan (63rd) scored the equaliser for Indian Bank.

In the tie-breaker, Ashwin, Raj Narayan and Johnson scored for Juniors while S. Prabhakaran and Venkatesan scored for Indian Bank.

Mr. Atul Anand, Tirunelveli District Collector, presided and Mr. K. Jothi Kumaran, secretary general, IHF, gave away the prizes.
