Ajith Kumar stars in Theni's win

SIVAKASI, JULY 4. Ajith Kumar's five for 14 helped Theni defeat Virudhunagar by nine wickets for its second win in the four-team `A' zone league of the TNCA - P.R. Thevar Trophy inter-district under-17 cricket tournament at Ayya Nadar Janakiammal College ground here on Sunday.

In another match, defending champion Vellore beat Ramanathapuram by 86 runs for its third win, thanks to impressive bowling by Rohit (four for 13) and Ramesh (three for 16).

Vellore and Theni qualified for the knockout phase.

In the `B' Zone, Nagapattinam and Dharmapuri qualified for the knock-out phase with two wins each.

The scores:

Virudhunagar 49 in 18.3 overs (Ajith Kumar five for 14) lost to Theni 53 for one in four overs.

Vellore 141 in 44.4 overs (C. Babu 29, Deivandran four for 27) bt Ramanathapuram 55 in 18.5 overs (Ramesh three for 16, Rohit four for 13).

At Nagapattinam (B zone): Thanjavur 139 in 50 overs (Prakash 29) lost to Nagapattinam 140 for four in 37.1 overs (Raman 55 not out, Tamilarasan 26 not out).

Nilgiris 163 in 48.2 overs (Nishad 32, Yuvaraj three for 36, Thirupathy three for 40) bt Dharmapuri 72 in 28.1 overs (Lenishmon four for 16, Rohit four for 11).

At Viluppuram: Viluppuram DCA 276 for seven in 50 overs (R. Karthikeyan 65, S. Senthil Kumar 29, K.t. Dhileepan 64, A. Sameer Khan 45 not out) bt Kanyakumari 106 for seven in 50 overs (Sheiak Abdul 25 not out).

Kancheepuram 80 in 37.1 overs (Rajesh four for 16) bt Tiruvarur 38 in 16.1 overs (Ramachandran six for 21, R. Pandiyarajan four for 10).

At Tiruvallur:

Karur DCA 72 in 37.3 overs (N. Arun three for 13) lost to Tiruvallur 73 for one in 10.3 overs (J. Prashanth 37 not out).

Sivagangai 185 for nine in 50 overs (R. Venkat Raman 83, T. Selva Ganapathy 36, B. Magesh Kumar four for 17) bt Thoothukudi 84 in 28.1 overs (C. Saravanan six for 19).

Tiruvallur 224 in 49.4 overs (S. Venkat Vasan 65, M. Deepak 68, J. Balakrishnan 30, K. Karthik three for 16) bt Sivagangai 155 for nine in 50 overs (T. Selva Ganapathy 63, V. Senthil Kumar 33, K. Kishore three for 18).
