African favourites on top

CAIRO, JULY 4. Senegal, South Africa, Nigeria and Morocco all climbed to the top of their respective groups in African World Cup qualifying, each posting victories on Saturday, all but Morocco at home.

Babacar Gueye scored in the 20th minute and Senegal beat Zambia 1-0 in Dakar for its second victory in three matches. That put it atop Group One with six points, two better than Zambia.

Elsewhere, South Africa beat Burkina Faso 2-0 in Johannesburg, Nigeria won 1-0 over Algeria in Abjua, and Morocco prevailed 1-0 in Botswana. In other matches, it was: Uganda 1, Ghana 1; Cape Verde Islands 1, Congo 1; Libya 1, Sudan 0; Gabon 2, Angola 2; Rwanda 0, Zimbabwe 2; and Malawi 1, Guinea 1. — AP
