Monsoon arrives over Delhi

By Our Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI, JULY 5. The much-awaited monsoon has finally arrived over the city and its neighbourhood. But indications are that the good tidings may not last long.

Senior officials in the India Meteorological Department said today that the low-pressure area over central India, which has been able to finally push the northern limit of the monsoon to Delhi, was gradually weakening.

It was likely to die off in about two or three days, resulting in the monsoon trough retreating once again to the foothills of the Himalayas. In other words, except for the north-east, other parts of the country could be in for another phase of lull in the monsoon from the middle of the week.

The officials, however, hastened to add that the looming period of lull need not be a cause for worry as surges and lulls were not unusual.
