NEW DELHI, JULY 5. Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL) today signed a concession agreement with the Union Government to pave the way for setting up the first "greenfield" airport in the country. The new international airport will come up at Devanahalli, 29 km from Bangalore, on build-own-operate and transfer basis with public-private participation. The State Government, through the Karnataka State Investment and Industries Development Corporation and the Airports Authority of India, will hold 26 per cent of the equity, and the joint venture partner will hold the rest. The joint venture partner was selected through global tendering process, comprising Siemens of Germany, Unique Zurich of Switzerland, and Larsen & Toubro of India. The Centre has agreed to grant concession to BIAL to design, develop, finance, construct, commission, maintain, operate and manage the airport. The State Government will provide 4,300 acres of land. The project, which is likely to be completed in three years, is the first of its kind in the country. The initial phase of the project is to have a capacity to handle five million passengers annually, but the master plan provides for an ultimate capacity of 40 million passengers. The airport will handle a cargo load of 1.3 lakh tonnes a year. The existing airport has the capacity to handle 20 lakh passengers and 30,000 tonnes of cargo annually. The concession agreement was signed by the Civil Aviation Secretary, Ajay Prasad, the BIAL chief, W. Bischoff, and the Additional Chief Secretary of the State Government, S. Krishnakumar. The Chief Minister, N. Dharam Singh, and his deputy, Siddaramaiah, were present. The construction of the Rs. 1,300-crore international airport will start by September. Speaking to presspersons, the Union Minister of State for Civil Aviation, Praful Patel, said: "The greenfield project has been conceptualised to bridge the huge resource gap and to increase the management and efficiency levels to world-class standards.'' Mr. Patel said another greenfield airport would shortly come up at Hyderabad and give ``tough competition'' to the proposed airport at Devanahalli.
