GSTAAD, JULY 6. Second-seed Juan Carlos Ferrero, the 2003 French Open champion, crashed out of the Swiss Open in the first round on Tuesday after falling 7-6, 6-4 to Austrian Stefan Koubek. The Spanish clay-court specialist failed to find his best form in the Alpine resort. He lost a first set tiebreak 7-4 and was then broken in the second set. Ferrero's compatriot David Ferrer progressed into the second round with a 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 victory over Tomas Berdych.
Gaudio crushes Davydenko
At Bastad, Gaston Gaudio lost only four games in a straight-set victory over Nikolay Davydenko in the first round of the Swedish Open. Gaudio, the French Open champion, won 6-3, 6-1 on centre-court over the unseeded Russian, who has won two ATP tournaments on clay in his career. Gaudio, seeded No. 2, is the highest seed remaining in the Swedish Open. Top-seeded Carlos Moya of Spain withdrew because of an injury he sustained last weekend.
In other first-round matches, No. 5 seed Tommy Robredo of Spain rallied from a set down to outlast Agustin Calleri of Argentina 4-6, 7-5, 6-4, Kristof Vliegen of Belgium topped France's Arnaud Di Pasquale 6-4, 6-2 and Filippo Volandri of Italy rallied Argentina's past Guillermo Canas 4-6, 7-6(1), 6-4.
The results:
At Gstaad (Swiss Open): Stefan Koubek bt Juan Carlos Ferrero 7-6 (4), 6-4; David Ferrer bt Tomas Berdych 2-6, 6-3, 6-4.
