ICC unveils 2007 World Cup match venues
LONDON: The International Cricket Council (ICC), unveiling the eight match venues for World Cup 2007 in the West Indies, turned down a bid from Florida. Although the ICC wants to raise the profile of cricket in the United States, Broward County, was not picked on Monday because it did not meet selection criteria. Twelve bids were considered.
``This was not a gimmick,'' ICC president Ehsan Mani said when asked about Florida's proposal. ``Their bid was considered in the same way as all the others. What we have to ensure is the integrity and quality of the World Cup in terms of venues.''
The venues are: Antigua, Barbados, Grenada, Guyana, Jamaica, St. Kitts, St. Lucia and Trinidad and Tobago.
Fifty-one matches will be played in as many days during the tournament. Sixteen teams two more than at last year's World Cup in South Africa will participate. The 2007 edition will be held from February to April. AP
