Karnataka Police overwhelms BEL

BANGALORE, JULY 6. Karnataka State Police ensured its place in the fourth phase of the V Karunakaran & D.S. Murthy memorial hockey tournament with a thumping 11-1 victory over Bharat Electronics Limited at the KSHA stadium here on Tuesday. Sports Authority of India and Army Supply Corps are the two other teams from Pool B to qualify for the final phase of the tournament.

Winger Lakshman Rao was in top form for the State Police. He fired in five goals, starting off in the second minute. His other goals came in the 11th, 22nd, 32nd and 44th minutes. Chetan Kumar converted a penalty stroke hit in the sixth minute while Rakesh (23rd), Parmesh (39th), Umesh Mudgar (42nd), Roshan Madappa (44th) and Manjunath Jadhav (60th) completed the tally. Venkatesh scored off a penalty corner for BEL's only goal.

In another match, Pioneer Corps Training Centre pulverised Vasu (Hubli), also by an identical 11-1 margin. Cyprian Aind had a quartet of goals (10th, 35th, 58th and 68th mins) and Dinesh Kumar had a treble (5th, 40th and 66th mins). Sairaj (15th), S. Mundu (20th), S. Baig (23rd) and Ekka (57th) were the other scorers. Chandrashekar scored Vasu's sole goal in the 27th minute.

In another pool A fixture, Central Excise and Sports Authority of India played out a 1-1 draw. Ravi scored the first goal, putting SAI ahead in the 47th minute and Central Excise scored the equaliser seven minutes later.

Hindustan Aeronautics Limited and BPCL have made the fourth phase from Pool A while the third team will be decided after the Canara Bank plays BPCL on Wednesday.
