Scrappy AG's Office beats Southern Railway

By Our Sports Reporter

CHENNAI, JULY 6. AG's Office's listless performance overall was masked by the 4-0 victory it posted over Southern Railway in the Cosco-Vittal Trophy football tournament at the Nehru Stadium here on Tuesday.

Unable to make coherent moves, the AG's forwardline cut a sorry picture. Its defence, too, was patchy.

There were a number of gilt-edged chances it squandered in the first half while Southern Railway too missed many of the opportunities that came its way.

AG's went ahead through a penalty that came its way when Andrew handled the ball while trying to tackle Raghupathy inside the box. Referee Bagavathiraj showed the spot and Jackson converted it. With a 1-0 lead, AG's put in a lot more effort after the breather. Selvakumar, who had missed a close chance, made amends by heading (60th minute) home off a cross by Raj Mohan.

A set-piece combination between Raj Mohan and Selvakumar resulted in the former (62nd) pushing the ball through the outstretched hands of 'keeper Amal Raj. Towards the close, substitute Merlin Kamalesh hit a long-ranger to make it 4-0.

In another encounter, Dhinamani, which will figure in the senior division next season, went down fighting to Indian Bank 2-1.

David put Dhinamani ahead in the 27th minute but Indian Bank quickly recovered through goals from Mike Chinedu (40th) and Syed Sabir Pasha (45th).
