Arecanut growers seek Rs. 85 per kg.

By Our Staff Correspondent

PUTTUR, JULY 6. The Puttur Taluk Sahakari Sangagala Okkoota has urged the State Government to fix the minimum support price (MSP) for arecanut at Rs. 85 a kg as against Rs. 60 a kg now. It said the production cost for Mangalore Chali variety of arecanut was Rs. 61.30.

A press release from the okkoota president, A. Jeevan Bhandary, here stated that a delegation of arecanut growers, led by the President of South Canara District Central Cooperative Bank, M.N. Rajendra Kumar, would meet the Chief Minister, N. Dharam Singh, and submit a memorandum in this regard.

The Government should declare a support price in line with the "Kerala model".

The okkota said the Government should set up a nodal agency to procure arecanut.
