24 couples tie the knot

CHITRADURGA, JULY 6. Ashada, a month considered inauspicious, did not come in the way of the marriage of these 24 couples at Sri Murugha Math, Chitradurga. Witnessing the mass marriage here on Monday, Jolabasava Swamiji of Kalmatha at Adavani in Andhra Pradesh praised the efforts of Shivamurthy Murugharajendra Swamiji of the math in dispelling ignorance and blind beliefs in society.

``We thought mass marriages at Sri Murugha Math will only be simple. But they are educative too. At the same time, you are moving forward to fight blind beliefs and conservative attitudes. This is what exactly the Sharanas of the 12th Century had shown us,'' Sri Joladabasava Swamiji said.

Mari Rachoti Swamiji of Chaki Math took strong exception to extravagant marriages.

Sri Shivamurthy Swamiji explained the principles of Kayaka (work culture) and Dasoha (donation to the needy in the form of food), which are the basic preachings of the Sharanas of 12th Century.

A young woman married a physically challenged youth at the function.
