Senthil settles issue in SBI's favour

CHENNAI, JULY 7. SBI overcame a late burst from PSNA College (Dindigul) to post a thrilling last-gasp 2-1 win in the quarterfinals of the Cosco-Vittal Trophy at the Nehru stadium on Wednesday.

Senthil Kumar capped a good match with a spectacular goal for SBI in the 88th minute after Titus had neutralised the Bank team's 1-0 advantage in the 81st minute. Senthil carried the ball through midfield and fired a fierce 20-yarder from the left flank that crashed into the right corner of the net.

Earlier, in the 38th minute, a M. Baskaran header off a rebound evaded the goalkeeper to give SBI the lead.

PSNA tried hard to wipe out the deficit and came achingly close on at least two occasions when the ball deflected off the post.

SBI goalkeeper T. J. Edwin had a great outing, pulling off at least three full-stretch saves, including one in the dying seconds. Titus' late equaliser came as a result of some deft footwork but it went in vain.

In another quarterfinal, Netaji SC beat HPF (Udhagamandalam) 2-0. Naresh Kumar and Paneerselvam scored off Kumarvel's crosses in the 69th and 79th minute. — Our Sports Reporter
