Gayle puts West Indies into final
By Ted Corbett
LONDON,
JULY 7.
Chris Gayle, with a spectacular unbeaten 132, helped West Indies enter the final and knock England out of its own One-Day International tournament at Lord's on Tuesday.
The Caribbeans needed all but 5 balls of its 50 overs to score 286 and win by seven wickets.
Gayle, at his most laid-back, scored the third century of the match. His 132 contained a lesson which the England side would do well to learn.
He and Ramnaresh Sarwan ran every single that was available throughout their stand of 187 at a run a ball for the second wicket while England was so tied down in its first 30 overs that only 101 runs came.
At the same point the West Indies was 145, a crucial difference.
When Sarwan was the first of two wickets in 10 balls for James Anderson in his second spell leaving 84 needed in 12 overs Brian Lara went to the wicket looking as if he had decided to win the match in a hurry. But he also fell victim to Anderson, the only England bowler apart from Steve Harmison who has impressed during this disappointing series.
It was left to Ricardo Powell to help `Man of the Match' Gayle complete the victory in a stand of 68 runs in 47 balls.
