Everton's record offer to Rooney
London: Premier league club Everton said on Tuesday that it has offered teenage sensation Wayne Rooney a new five-year contract until 2009 for a club record salary. But no financial details were given.
"The offer is the biggest ever made in this club's history,'' said club boss Trevor Birch. ``We believe this is the right offer for Wayne, which fully reflects his growing stature in football.''
Everton could rid itself of its rising debts if it decides to sell the 18-year-old Rooney, who rose to stardom with four England goals at Euro 2004 in Portugal.
But Birch expressed his hope that the starlet will stay on: ``Everyone at Everton is anxious that Wayne remains at Goodison Park.''
Manchester United and Chelsea are said to be after Rooney, but according to the Everton board must come up with at least 60 million euros.
Rooney is currently sidelined for two months with a fractured foot sustained in England's losing quarterfinal Euro match to host Portugal. DPA
