F-1 drivers thrill spectators

LONDON: Formula one drivers thrilled half a million spectators on Tuesday night as they roared down streets in central London in their powerful cars.

About 500,000 spectators lined the route along Regent Street to watch, delaying the start and causing the event to be shortened.

Bathed in warm evening sunshine, fans jostled for the best viewing positions and even took to building roofs at the start of the route in Waterloo Place.

During the 45-minute delay at the start, police attempted to clear a path through the crowds around Regent Street for the famous cars to pass through. When the event finally got under way, the cheering fans were drowned out by the roar of the Formula one engines.

British former world champion Nigel Mansell sent up clouds of smoke and filled the air with the smell of burning rubber as he performed a series of spectacular spins.

Mansell returned to the wheel in a Jordan car, along with other big name drivers, including Jenson Button and David Coulthard. — AP
