KSA to probe Anwar issue
BANGALORE,
JULY 7.
The Karnataka Swimming Association will probe into the overage issue relating to Asif Anwar, who was debarred in the 31st Junior National aquatic championship held at Jaipur last week.
Anwar, a backstroke swimmer, had moved to Bangalore from Delhi and ironically it was the Delhi officials who lodged a protest against him for giving a false age. The SFI, acting on the complaint, disqualified Anwar and also the Karnataka 4x100m medley relay squad which had won the gold.
T. D. Vijayaraghavan, secretary of KSA, said "we took the age certificate in good faith. It has been an embarrassing situation for us that he has been disqualified along with the team. All along, our swimmers had remained free from such controversies and I am disappointed about the whole thing. We will definitely look into the matter and seek a probe," said Mr. Vijayaraghavan.
Undeterred by Anwar's episode, the State swimmers ruled the pool at Jaipur and Karnataka finished overall champion. The KSA probe apart, it is for the SFI to put in place a proper medical panel to check the overage menace at junior National meets. Our Special Correspondent
