Dreschsier scraps Olympic plans
Karlsruhe (Germany): Germany's two-time Olympic women's long jump champion Heike Drechsler on Thursday admitted she had lost her fight to be at this summer's Games in Athens. ``I have to admit that my performance potential is not good enough for the necessary distances,'' she said. ``Unfortunately I cannot jump for titles, neither at national nor international level.''
Drechsler, 39, had been hoping to defend the title she won four years ago at Sydney but said she was now forced to scrap plans for the Olympics and other title events. The 1983 and 1993 world champion has a best distance of 6.39m this season, well off the Olympic norm of 6.70m, and is only eighth in the German rankings. DPA
