Sharapova likely to miss Olympics
By P. Subramanyam
LONDON,
JULY 8.
Wimbledon champion Maria Sharapova is likely to miss the Athens Olympics in August, according to officials who made an announcement here on Thursday.
It is understood that all countries had to announce their team by June 14, and Russia has already named its squad Anastasia Myskina, Elena Dementieva, Nadia Petrova and Svetlana Kuznetsova. Even if one of the players withdraw, Vera Zvonareva will join the team and not Sharapova.
The International Tennis Federation insists that there is no way the decision can be changed. "It is a shame I agree... but all the places have been allocated now," said the ITF Secretary-General Debbie Jevans. "The problem is being on a team that is so strong," she added.
Jevans said, "We do not have wildcards here and that's not the issue. The issue is that there is a maximum of four players from an individual country allowed in the Games. On the cut-off date, there were four Russians ranked higher than Sharapova."
