Andreev takes out Costa

GSTAAD, JULY 8. Two-time champion Albert Costa of Spain was upset in the second round of the Swiss Open, surrendering in straight sets to Russia's Igor Andreev.

Andreev beat the 1996 and 1999 champion 6-2, 6-4 in an hour and 23 minutes to advance to the quarterfinals.

Costa was the latest of upsets for the 20-year-old Andreev.

He beat Spain's Juan Carlos Ferrero — the defending champion — in the second round at the French Open before losing to eventual champion Gaston Gaudio in the fourth round. Then, playing on grass for the first time at Queen's Club in London, he defeated his idol Andre Agassi.

Gonzalez, Zabaleta sail into quarterfinals

Chilean sixth seed Fernando Gonzalez beat Finn Jarkko Nieminen 7-6, 6-1 at the Swedish Open to earn a place in the quarterfinals.

Defending champion and eighth seed Mariano Zabaleta is also through after defeating Georgian Irakli Labadze 6-4, 1-6, 6-3.

Meanwhile, top-seeded Mahesh Bhupathi and Jonas Bjorkman defeated the Swedish pair of Ervin Eleskovic and Robert Lindstedt 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 to go through to the second round.

Vahaly advances

Brian Vahaly of the United States snapped a seven-match losing streak on Wednesday, beating Michal Mertinak of Slovakia 6-2, 6-2 to advance to the second round of the Hall of Fame tournament at Newport.

He will face top-seeded Vincent Spadea on Thursday.

In other first round matches, American qualifier Brian Baker defeated Wesley Moodie of South Africa 6-2, 6-7(4), 7-6(2); Glenn Weiner of the United States beat Alexander Peya of Austria 7-6(4), 6-4; Gilles Elseneer of Belgium defeated American Rajeev Ram 6-2, 6-3 and David Sanguinetti of Italy eliminated Robert Kendrick of the United States 3-6, 6-2, 6-3.

The results: At Gstaad (Swiss Open): Second round: Igor Andreev bt Albert Costa 6-2, 6-4;Felix Mantilla bt David Ferrer 6-3, 7-6(2); Rainer Schuettler bt Florian Mayer 6-3, 6-2.

At Bastad (Swedish Open): Second round: Mariano Zabaleta bt Irakli Labadze 6-4, 1-6, 6-3; Fernando Gonzalez bt Jarkko Nieminen 7-6(3), 6-1; Alberto Martin bt Filippo Volandri 5-7, 6-1, 6-4.

At Newport (Hall of Fame Championships): First round: Davide Sanguinetti bt Robert Kendrick 3-6, 6-2, 6-3; Glenn Weiner bt Alexander Peya 7-6(4), 6-4; Gilles Elseneer bt Rajeev Ram 6-2, 6-3; Brian Vahaly bt Michal Mertinak 6-2, 6-2; Brian Baker bt Wesley Moodie 6-2, 6-7(4), 7-6(2).
