Kasimdzhanov wins second game

TRIPOLI, JULY 8. Grandmaster Rustam Kasimdzhanov of Uzbekistan defeated Michael Adams of England in the second game of the World chess championship final here on Wednesday.

The win helped Kasimdzhanov gain a one-point lead (1.5-0.5) in the six-game final. Both of them agreed for a draw in the first game on Tuesday.

Adopting Petroff defence, Adams was caught in a knight sortie in the middle game. Even trading of pawns at regular intervals did not help Adams and Kasimdzhanov succeeded in maintaining the pressure.

However, as the time pressure approached, Kasimdzhanov missed a simple tactical stroke. But Adams failed to spot it, much to the relief of Kasimdzhanov. Adams resigned after 55 moves. — PTI
