BANGALORE, JULY 15. Army XI took the V. Karunakaran and D.S. Murthy Memorial all-India inter-club hockey tournament defeating defending champion Indian Overseas Bank (Chennai) 3-1 at the KSHA stadium here on Thursday.

In the 10th minute Army XI's skipper Susan Topno struck the ball cleanly into the IOB net. The Bankmen worked hard to draw level in the 20th minute, with G. Gopinath slotting home the third penalty corner.

After the interval, Army XI surged ahead through Topno's second goal and then shut IOB out of the match with Avtar Singh's 58-minute strike.

In the match for third and fourth places, Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited beat last year's runner-up Madras Engineering Group 4-1. Ravi Naicker, Len Aiyappa, Amar Aiyamma and Sabu Varkey were the scorers for BPCL. MEG's only goal came off a penalty stroke in the 52nd minute taken by Marudu Pandian.
