TIRUCHI, JULY 16 . A new cooperative society exclusively for permanent anganwadi women workers Tiruchi District Social Welfare Department Anganwadi Employees Cooperative Thrift and Credit Society was launched here recently. Speaking at a function organised to disburse the maiden loans to the tune of Rs.4.20 lakhs to its members, the Joint Registrar of Cooperative Societies, R. Ambikeswaran, said the cooperative movement launched in the country in 1904 had taken deep roots in the last century. With the new society, the district accounted for 99 employees cooperative thrift and credit societies. The highlight of the new society was that it would be maintained and run by the women members alone. Mr. Ambikeswaran called upon the anganwadi workers to take full advantage of this society. The members procuring loans should utilise them in an effective manner. They should also be prompt in repaying dues so that financial assistance could be extended to more needy women. The Deputy Registrar of the Cooperative Societies, S. Ravichandran, said all thrift and credit societies functioning in the Tiruchi zone were making profits every year. Referring to the new society, he said over 330 anganwadi workers employed in 16 blocks had been enrolled as members of the society and they had paid a share capital of Rs.1.53 lakhs. To help the members in need of financial assistance, the society procured loan from the Tiruchi District Central Cooperative Bank and disbursed it. He called upon the members to extend cooperation for improving the financial condition of the society with hiked share capital and thrift deposit so that financial support could be extended to the members from the society's own funds. The Project Officer, World Bank-assisted Integrated Child Development Project (ICDP), S. Revathi, said a total of 1,362 anganwadi centres were functioning in 16 blocks in the district and they accounted for an equal number of employees. At present the employees of the anganwadi centres situated in the Lalgudi, Pullambadi, Mannachanallur, Anthanallur, Tiruverumbur and Manikandam blocks have joined the thrift and credit society.
