Tiruchi
By Our Staff Reporter
TIRUCHI, JULY 16. Work on the Srirangam Drinking Water Supply Improvement Scheme, sanctioned at an estimated cost of Rs.7.90 crores, is expected to commence within the next two months. Tenders have already been called for the project and the bids are to be opened by mid-August, the Superintending Engineer of the Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage Board, Tiruchi, R.Rajagopalan, told The Hindu here today. The project is was scheduled to be completed within 12 months from the date of commencement of work. The TWAD had taken up the project based on a request from the Tiruchi Corporation. The scheme would fulfill a need as major parts of the temple town of Srirangam still remain without adequate potable water supply, with the existing scheme having its source on the Cauvery river. A collector well would be established at Alavantharpadithurai on the Coleroon riverbed under the improvement scheme with an ultimate pumping capacity of 15 million litres per day (MLD), ensuring 110 litres per capita per day (LPCD). The project would cater to an anticipated population of 1.38 lakhs by 2031 and also to a floating population of one lakh expected during festival seasons. Distribution mains would be laid for a total stretch of 36 km to strengthen the existing distribution network laid about 50 years back, Mr.Rajagopalan said. Three new overhead tanks (OHT) would be constructed in addition to the existing four OHTs. The new OHTs would have a total capacity of 20 lakh litres. The Board would call for tenders shortly for the execution of the Rs.3.94 crores Combined Drinking Water Supply Scheme for rural 35 habitations in Tiruverambur union near Tiruchi. The source for the scheme would be the existing Tiruverambur drinking water scheme headwork situated on the Coleroon river. The Tiruchi Corporation has also requested the TWAD Board to revamp the entire distribution network in the City so as to ensure equitable distribution of drinking water to all areas. Currently, several residential pockets, especially those in the newly added areas were getting inadequate supply even as several areas within the City got copious supply. The problem is essentially due to inadequate storage facility and poor distribution network in the suburbs. However, the Corporation was yet to pay the investigation charges for the project. The TWAD Board would take up technical investigation on the project as soon as the civic body paid the sum, Mr.Rajagopalan said.
