Participate in science and technology research, women told

By Our Staff Reporter

TIRUCHI, JULY 16 . The need for more participation of women in the field of science and technology was stressed by speakers at a workshop on "Enhancing and Sensitising Women in Science and Technology in Societal Issues," organised by the Shrimathi Indira Gandhi College and the Science City, Chennai, in the City today.

The two-day workshop was organised as part of a project "Action Research to bring Gender Parity in Science and Technology," funded by the Department of Science and Technology.

Inaugurating the workshop, A. M. Raman, vice-chairman, Science City, said though women had enough opportunities in education up to a certain extent, very few women pursue research studies. Social restrictions played a major role in deterring women from rising to policy-making positions, he said and urged students to work hard to overcome such hurdles.

Gowri Chandrakasan, Principal Investigator of the project, said women accounted for just about 20 per cent in research and technology development and urged students to take up careers in the science and technology.

The principal of Shrimathi Indira Gandhi College, K.Meena, said that despite the advances in science and technology and the communication revolution, domestic pressures and lack of gender sensitivity in the society prevented women from pursuing higher studies and research.

In the interaction session that followed, women technocrats discussed the reasons regarding the lack of women participation in the field of science and technology. The general consensus was that social taboos, social conditioning and lack of opportunities were some of the major factors that promoted gender disparity in work places.
