Five killed in road accidents

TUMKUR, JULY 20. Five persons have died and as many were injured in road accidents in Tumkur, Udupi and Davangere districts in the State since Monday.

A senior member of the Herur Gram Panchayat in Kunigal taluk of Tumkur district, M. Nanjundappa (40), and his friend from Tavarekere in the same taluk, Venkatesh alias Thimmappa (30), were killed on the spot when a tractor ran over them at Gavi Math near Kunigal town on Monday. Nanjundappa's daughter, Chandana (4), suffered serious injuries in the accident. Nanjundappa, it was said, had brought his daughter for medical treatment to Kunigal and was taking her back home when the accident occurred. Chandana has been taken to NIMHANS in Bangalore. The police said the driver of the tractor fled the scene.

Our Udupi Staff Correspondent reports:

A man was killed when he was thrown out of a bus near Saviralapa Dhumavati Temple in Udupi city on Tuesday. According to the Udupi Town Police, Abdul Aziz (42) was on his way from Korangarapady to the city in a private bus when he was thrown out of the bus after the bus driver applied the brakes suddenly near the temple.

Abdul Aziz, who suffered severe head injuries, was rushed to the KMC Hospital at Manipal, where he died.

UNI reports: A 40-year-old woman and the driver of her vehicle were killed on the spot and four were injured when their van collided with a truck near Anagodu village on National Highway 4 in Davangere district in the early hours of Tuesday.

The police said the van was on its way to Mysore from Mumbai. The driver of the truck has been arrested.
