A rousing end planned for H.L.N. Simha's birth centenary fete

By Our Staff Correspondent

MYSORE, JULY 20. The valedictory function of the birth centenary celebrations of H.L.N. Simha, a leading light of Kannada filmdom and theatre, will be held at Kalamandira Complex here on Saturday. C.R. Simha, secretary of the organising committee of the celebrations, told presspersons here on Tuesday that book releases, a photo exhibition, a play and a workshop on film and theatre would be held on the occasion.

The celebrations, inaugurated in Bangalore by Rajkumar, Kannada filmstar, in November 2003, are being organised in association with the Directorate of Kannada and Culture and Rangayana, a repertory company here. Mr. Rajkumar and his wife, Parvathamma Rajkumar, have offered assistance for the conduct of the celebrations.

Mr. C.R. Simha said H.L.N. Simha had fostered the Kannada film industry at its nascent stage. He helped stabilise the industry with the films he produced between the Forties and the Sixties. It was he who introduced Mr. Rajkumar, then known as Muthukumar, in Kannada films by offering him a role in Bedara Kannappa during 1954. Anugraha and Abba Aa Hudigi, films produced by him, were landmarks.

The late Simha made the first "social movie", Samsara Nauke, in the talkie era. He acted in many silent movies. Samsara Nauke and Shahajan were plays produced by him in association with Mohammed Pir. H.L.N. Simha also launched Simhas Select Artistes, a theatre group.

Mr. C.R. Simha said the photo exhibition on the life of the doyen and his contributions to filmdom would be held at Suchitra Art Gallery. M.P. Shankar, film producer and actor, would inaugurate the event.

He said the workshop would be held at Sriranga auditorium on Rangayana premises. Chidambara Rao Jambe, director of Rangayana, would preside over the event. H.S. Umesh, S.R. Ramesh, H.A. Parshwanath and Rajashekar Kadamba, theatre persons, would participate.

The books, H.L.N. Simha: Life and Contribution, authored by C.S. Nanjundaiah, and the play, Abba Aa Hudugi, published by Vasantha Prakashan, would be released. A documentary on the doyen, produced by Anuradha Nandakumar of Namana Creations, would be screened.

Ratnakar and party would stage select scenes from Samsara Nauke.

Mr. Shankar would inaugurate the function at Kalamandira. Master Hirannaiah, theatre person, would preside over the function. Umashri, theatre and film artiste; and Darshan Tugadeep and Sudeep, actors, would participate.
