GULBARGA, JULY 20. Members of the Gulbarga Bar Association (GBA) today boycotted court proceedings in the district demanding that a permanent Bench of the Karnataka High Court be set up in Gulbarga. The members, who withdrew "court boycott" in September last following an appeal by the Chief Justice of the Karnataka High Court, N.K. Jain, decided to resume their agitation in view of the demand for a Bench of the High Court by people of some districts. The advocates staged a rasta roko near Vallabhbhai Patel Chowk and marched to the Deputy Commissioner's office to submit a memorandum addressed to Mr. Jain. The president of the association, M.N. Patil, said the association would hold a meeting in two days to take a decision on the agitation. Referring to the allocation of Rs. 20 crore to set up a Bench, he said according to estimates, at least Rs. 400 crore was needed for the purpose. The memorandum reiterated the consent given by the association that it was agreeable to establish one circuit Bench each in the Gulbarga and Belgaum Revenue divisions pending consideration of establishing a permanent Bench in north Karnataka.
