Health check-up camp

NEW DELHI JULY 31. The Director of the Central Bureau of Investigation, Umashankar Misra, today inaugurated a day-long free health check-up camp at CBI Colony in Vasant Vihar. Besides general health check-up, residents also availed of the free diagnostic tests for blood haemoglobin, blood sugar, blood smear and other such tests.

The camp, organised by the CBI Ladies' Welfare Association, was also aimed at spreading awareness about malnutrition, tuberculosis and AIDS. The Central Government Health Services dispensary in the Colony, where the camp was held, was inaugurated in February this year. Officials from the CGHS also attended the camp. The doctors, who participated in the camp, were from Escorts Hearts Institute and Research Centre, CGHS and other private institutions.

Trekking expedition

NEW DELHI JULY 31. The Northern Railway Trekking and Mountaineering Association (NRTMA) has sent its first group of 45 railway employees and their families on a high altitude trekking expedition to Amarnath via Bal Tal. According to the NRTMA president, Ashutosh Swami, and general secretary, Vinay Singh, the expedition would create enthusiasm for adventure tourism among railwaymen and their colleagues.

Digital traffic signal installed

NEW DELHI JULY 31. A digital traffic signal has been installed at C1A/C2 block crossing on Pankha Road in Janakpuri. The area Councillor, Sanjay Puri, and members of residents' welfare association of the area contributed their bit in installing this unique signal at the junction that was becoming more and more accident-prone. The DCP (Traffic) South, P.C.Hota, inaugurated the signal today.

Madras Sappers lift trophy

NEW DELHI JULY 31. The Madras Sappers have won the Indian Army's COAS Overall Sports Trophy for the seventh time this year. The trophy is awarded to a Regimental Centre that stands first in the overall tally of points awarded for the various sports championships held in the Army. The Madras Sappers have been winning this trophy every year since its inception. The Colonel Commandant, Lt. General N.P. Aul, and the Commandant, MEG and Centre, J.J. Manavalan, received the trophy.

Invocation for rain

NEW DELHI JULY 31. Dakshina Bharata Samaj will organise a "varuna japam", a vedic invocation for rain, at the Shiva temple in Sector 4 of Vaishali, inside the Income Tax Colony campus, this Sunday morning from 8 a.m. onward.

Quiz competition

NEW DELHI JULY 31. The Hindustan Times' newspaper in education programme -- PACE -- will be organising its Annual Mega National Inter-School Quiz Competition -- InQuizitive 2004 -- in the Capital on August 4. The regional finals were conducted in Bhopal, Jaipur, Lucknow and Chandigarh from July 21 to July 30 and the winners from these four regions will be competing in the national finals.

Congress appointment

NEW DELHI JULY 31. Raisuddin Malik has been appointed as the new vice-chairman of the Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee's Minority Cell by its chairman, Mohammed Zanhagir. In a press statement issued here, Mr. Malik said he would work with full sense of responsibility to ensure welfare of the minorities and strengthen the party.
