GIDA starts work on four-lane road

By Our Staff Reporter

KOCHI, AUG. 1. The Goshree Island Development Authority (GIDA) has begun work on the road extending from the reclaimed land near Marine Drive to Chathiath church.

The proposed road has a length of 1,250 metres and breadth of 24 metres. The four-lane road will come up parallel to the National Waterway-3. The GIDA has made arrangements to plant trees along the walkway built on the side near backwaters. A median dividing the road will also be constructed.

Vehicles coming from the islands on the west and plying through the Goshree bridges would be able to enter National Highway-47 without entering the city by passing through the new road.

Vehicles passing through this road can take the Pachalam-Pottakuzhi-Mamangalam route to enter the National Highway.

The proposed roundabout at Pachalam has been designed as an extension of the new road. Vehicles coming from northern parts of the city will be able to reach the Shanmugham Road without entering busy areas like Palarivattom and Kaloor by taking this route.

Work on the road has begun from the Ernakulam side. Sand filling is in progress at the site.

The District Collector and secretary of GIDA, A.P.M. Mohammed Hanish, has suggested that tipper lorries carrying sand for filling purpose should ply only after 10 p.m. to avoid traffic congestion during daytime.

The Collector has given directions to complete the roadwork by November. According to the agreement, the GIDA has got time till December to complete the work.

The Island development authority expects that value for the reclaimed land will increase considerably with the completion of roadwork.

The Collector said that the process of sale of land would be carried out in tandem with the completion of roadwork.

He said the authority had taken steps for issuing tenders for the sale of reclaimed land near the Marine Drive.
