Replacement time extended till month-end

By Our Staff Reporter

CHENNAI, AUG. 2. The Madras High Court today extended the deadline for private schools to replace thatched roof with a pucca structure from July 31 to August 31.

Justice R. Balasubramanian, passing orders on a writ petition filed by the Tamil Nadu Tamil and English Schools Association, said: "Each member is given time till August 31 to comply with all defects pointed out by the Government. If any school has not complied with such an order, it can send a representation to the authority concerned stating the steps taken by them in rectifying the defects, the progress made and the time required."

Asking the authorities to consider such representations and pass orders in accordance with law, Mr. Justice Balasubramanian said, "if, after the expiry of time fixed by the court, any member of the petitioner-association fails to send any representation for extension of time, the Government is at liberty to take action against such schools."

The judge also directed the members not to conduct classes under thatched roof and asked the authorities to pass orders on representations by schools in three days from the date of receipt of such letters.

`Time too short'

In its petition, the association said the time given to schools was too short and hence wanted the Education department authorities to be restrained from proceeding against schools, which failed to remove thatched sheds by July 31.

Pointing out that the members were willing to "cure the defects," the petitioner said it would be "practically as well as financially difficult to carry out the Government's instructions unless reasonable time is given for compliance." Many schools had to mobilise funds for pucca structures through bank loans, it said.
