4 die of diarrhoea

Ramanathapuram Aug. 2. Four people are reported have died due to outbreak of diarrhoea at Vannivayal and surrounding areas of this district last week. Twenty six persons have been hospitalised.

Veeran (50), Gurunthi (60), Udaiyal (80) and Muthukarai were affected after they drank water from the Thoruvaroor `oorani'. All the four died before admission to hospital.

Two health teams have been sent to the village. All water sources have been chlorinated and the people of Vannivayal have been asked not to fetch water from the `oorani'.

However, the Deputy Director (Health), A.T. Ramnath, denied that the deaths were due to diarrhoea.

All primary health centres have been alerted, he said.

Man held for murdering boy

Tirunelveli Aug. 2. The CB-CID police have arrested a person for murdering a seven-year old boy three years ago. The police remanded him to custody last night.

According to CB-CID sources, I. Arun (7), a Standard II student of Indra Nagar at Kovilpatti went missing on September 20, 2001. The boy's father, Issac Sundaram, filed a complaint with the police, accusing his wife Meena and her relatives of taking away the boy.

But the police took no action on the complaint forcing Mr. Issac to file a petition in Madras High Court, praying for a direction to the police to rescue his son. On the court's direction, the police arrested Meena's brother, Jayabalan, and mother Subbulakshmi but no information could be obtained from them. Mr. Sundaram again filed a petition with the plea that the case be transferred to the CB-CID. The CB-CID police arrested Meena's relative, Ponnusamy.

Ponnusamy reportedly said he took revenge on the family of Meena's father as his father was ousted from a family business by kidnapping the boy and murdered him. He later burnt the body in the forest near Pappakudi near Virudhunagar.

Lorry driver killed

Tirunelveli Aug. 2. A lorry driver was killed here early this morning when the vehicle dashed against a roadside tree.

According to the police, N. Balathandayuthapani (29) of Pettai was coming to Tirunelveli after loading broiler chicken at Singilipatti near Puliyangudi when the vehicle dashed against a tree at Singilipatti. He died on way to hospital.

B.C. Roy award

Roy National Award by the Medical Council of India will be given to Mayil Vahanan Natarajan, professor of Orthopaediac Surgery, Madras Medical College, by the President, A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, in New Delhi tomorrow. It is for his ``Custom Mega Prosthesis in Bone Tumours'', says a press release.

4 held for bank fraud

TIRUCHI AUG. 2. The police have arrested four persons, including a bank employee, charging them with defrauding the Musiri branch of Indian Bank to the tune of Rs. 4.98 lakhs. Official sources said the employee, Manohar, had in 2002 helped his relative Pakkirisamy open an account in the Musiri branch to deposit a fake demand draft for the amount drawn on the Gujarat State Union Bank. It was sent for collection to the Union Bank in Tiruchi city. The money was deposited in Pakkirisamy's account and even before the authenticity of the draft was determined, he had sent Rs. 3.7 lakhs by demand draft to Chinnakalai of Vadaputhupatti, Kodaikanal, according to the Deputy Superintendent of Police, R. Ilango.

The rest of the money was allegedly shared among Pakkirisamy, Rajendran, and Manohar. All the four were remanded to custody by a Musiri court.

Release water for samba: DK

CHENNAI AUG. 2. The Dravidar Kazhagam president, K. Veeramani, today urged the Government to release water from the Mettur reservoir before August 8 to enable farmers to take up samba cultivation.

The Chief Minister, Jayalalithaa, should ensure water release so that agriculturists began farming operations to raise the single crop, he said in a statement here.

Farmers would picket the Thanjavur Collectorate and the offices of the Revenue Divisional Officer at Tiruvarur and Nagapattinam on August 9 if the demand was not met.

Mr.Veeramani flayed the Government for releasing 7 tmc water from Mettur for Adi Perukku.

School records set afire

Nagercoil Aug. 2. The police are on the lookout for some persons who set fire to files in the Government middle school at Suchindram on Sunday. According to police sources, some persons broke open an almirah and set ablaze all files and other documents. The mischief came to light when the headmaster, Lawrence Daniel, opened room today. More than 500 students are studying in the school and there were more than 16 classrooms.

Special train to Coimbatore

CHENNAI AUG. 2. To clear the extra rush, Southern Railway will operate a special train from Chennai Central to Coimbatore on August 6. The special (685) will leave here at 9.15 p.m. on Friday and reach Coimbatore at 6.55 a.m. the next day. It will have one AC two-tier, one AC three-tier, 10 sleeper class compartments, three general second class and two luggage brake van coaches. It will stop at Arakkonam, Katpadi, Jolarpettai, Salem, Erode, Tiruppur and Coimbatore North stations.

Reservation will begin on Tuesday, a railway press release said.

Bomb hoax

Thanjavur Aug. 2. On noticing a paper pasted on the wall of a toilet, which stated that a bomb had been planted in the campus, authorities of Shanmugha Arts Science Technology and Research Academy (SASTRA) Deemed University here, informed the police.

The police came and checked the campus. The notice turned out to be a hoax.

Nine held

PERAMBALUR AUG. 2. Nine persons of Udayarpalayam and Jayamkondam were arrested today on the charge of possessing counterfeit currency notes to the tune of Rs. 20,300.

The District Superintendent of Police, P.Parasuraman, said that the action followed a tip-off about the flow of counterfeit currencies in and around T.Pazhur.

The police gave the names of the arrested persons as R. Veerandan (30), M. Michael (48), G. Palanirajan (28), S. Anandakumar (22), A. Imam Ali (52), A. Shahul Hamid (42), P. Jothivel (34), S. Alagar (30) and P. Manoharan (37). The arrested were produced before Judicial Magistrate, Perambalur, T.T. Harikrishnan, who remanded them to custody.

DMK men held

NAGAPATTINAM AUG.2. Six local DMK leaders of Mayiladuturai were taken into custody today for staging a road roko at Mayiladuturai condemning the reported speech of Jagaveerapandian, MLA (BJP) of Mayiladuturai, in the Assembly against the DMK.

The DMK members pasted posters accusing Jagaveerapandian but these were removed.

Accident relief centres

PUDUKOTTAI AUG. 2. The Collector, Jatindranath Swain, has asked officials to take steps to set up emergency accident relief centres in the district, after carrying out inspections.

At a meeting of the road safety committee held here recently, he said an emergency accident relief centre was set up near Bharathidasan University close to the Tiruchi-Pudukottai National Highway.

Speed humps and warning boards should be installed at the accident-prone areas. Warning boards were installed at 19 accident-prone areas. Steps would be taken to widen roads at accident-prone zones and medians would be installed.

PUDUKOTTAI AUG. 2. The need to develop Aranthangi town was discussed at a meeting held here on Friday.

The Collector, Jatindranath Swain, presided. Steps for widening roads, creation of pavements, removal of encroachments and prohibiting parking of vehicles in important thoroughfares were discussed.

The Aranthangi Municipal Chairman V. Sugantham, the Aranthangi Revenue Divisional Officer, Kutrala Madasamy, the Municipal Commissioner, S. Ravichandran, the Pudukottai Municipal Commissioner, Seeni Ajmal Khan, participated.

SANKAGIRI AUG. 2. The extraordinary general body meeting of the Sankagiri Advocates Association, which met here under the presidentship of T. K. Venkatesan, criticised the amendments relating to the Section 14 of the Advocates Act 1961.

The members of the Association observed a "black day'' today and called the amendments unnecessary. They also wanted that these amendments should be immediately withdrawn.

Damaged

ERODE AUG. 2. A lorry transporting poultry feed to Nagarcoil from Perundurai was destroyed when it caught fire after a milk tanker collided with it at Bharathypuram last night. Poultry feed worth Rs. 2.50 lakhs was damaged.

Fire and Rescue service personnel from Perundurai put out the fire.

ERODE AUG. 2. Thousands of men and women gathered at Bhavani Kooduthuri and performed special pujas in connection with the Aadi festival. Similarly, many performed pujas at the Cauvery in Erode and Kodumudi.

Under the supervision of the Superintendent of Police, P. Balasubramanian, police pickets were posted at Bhavani, Bhavanisagar, Kodivery, Erode and Kodumudi.

Petition dismissed

MADURAI AUG. 2. The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court today dismissed a writ petition of a sub-inspector working in Sivakasi (Virudhunagar district) challenging his transfer to Ramanathapuram.

The petitioner, Jesu, contended that he was transferred on seven occasions between 1998 and 2004, which was in violation of the established rules.

The Judge Justice F.M. Ibrahim Khalifullah dismissed the petition and upheld the transfer order of the Deputy Inspector General of Police (Madurai Range).

`Cancel conduct rules'

MADURAI AUG. 2. The Madurai Bar Association today appealed to the Madras High Court to cancel the 25-point conduct rules for lawyers. A resolution to this effect was passed at its general body meeting here.

The advocates said the conduct rules would not only affect the rights of the lawyers but also the cordial relationship between the Bench and the Bar. Further course of action would be decided at the bar federation meeting in Erode on August 7.

The MBA president, K. Vellaichamy, presided. Meanwhile, the All India Lawyers' Union described the conduct rules as "anti-democratic". In a statement, the AILU general secretary, M. Subramanian, said the Madras High Court should cancel the 25-point rules since they would deprive the advocates of their democratic rights.

Power shutdown

MADURAI AUG 2. There will be a power shutdown on August 3 and 4 in the areas served by the Vannaththiparai and Maturapuri sub-stations of the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board in Theni district owing to maintenance work.

August 3 (9 a.m. to 3 p.m.): Gudalur, Anchorpalayam, Kullakoundanpatti, Karunakkamuththampatti, Surulipatti, Narayanathevanpatti, Lower Camp, Melmanalar, Keezhmanalar and surrounding villages.

August 4 (9 a.m. to 3 p.m.): Maturapuri, Annanji, Allinagaram, Lakshmipuram, Krishnapuram, Karuththapatti, Vadapudupatti, Meenakshipuram and surrounding villages.
