By Our Staff Reporter

TIRUCHI, AUG. 2. A maiden school drama festival was held here on Saturday under the auspices of the Department of Arts and Culture, Tamil Nadu, Rasika Ranjana Sabha, and Students Enrichment Forum of Tiruchi.

Students played an active part in the dramas that brought out contemporary issues such as elimination of child labour, culture and heritage and environmental protection.

K. Raveendran, Head, Department of Drama, Tamil University, Thanjavur, lauded the students for their efforts, and said such ventures promoted theatre.

He said acting was a powerful tool and urged the students to use it properly to enhance their self-confidence and aptitude for teamwork. He promised the students that he would look into the feasibility of organising a workshop for students on theatre in Tiruchi.

N. Sekar, secretary, Rasika Ranjana Sabha, outlined the history and purpose of the Sabha and its achievements.

The Sabha, he said, played a major role in promoting music, dance and other cultural activities.

R. Gunasekaran, Assistant Director, Regional Department for the Development of Art and Culture, said the Sabha, along with the South Zone Culture Centre, provided opportunities to several artistes.

He assured that a drama festival for college students would be organised soon.

Kalaimamani Tiruchi Bharathan felicitated the students and said such performances helped to instil a love for acting in students.

Over 120 students of the Cauvery Matriculation School, Happy Kids Play Home, Sri Ramakrishna Vidyalaya, Sri Akhilandeswari Vidyalaya, Chinmaya Vidyalaya, Sri Sivananda Balalaya, Jayendra Matriculation School and Sister Rose Autism Centre of the Holy Cross Service Society participated.
