Temperature

TIRUCHI, AUG. 2. The city today registered a maximum temperature of 34.5 degree Celsius and a minimum of 26.4 degree Celsius.

Detained

The Commissioner of Police, T.P. Sundaramoorthy, has ordered detention of Chinnappadoss (54) of Tharanallur under Goonda Act.

Cases of attempts to murder and robberies were pending against him, he said in a statement.

Distributed

The Indian Red Cross Society distributed clothes and eatables to the residents of Mannarapuram, which was ravaged by fire today.

At a function organised in the evening, they were supplied with dhotis, sarees, old clothes, bread and biscuits, the secretary of the Tiruchi district branch of the IRCS, V. Badrinath, said in a statement here.

Freshers' Day

The Pavendar Bharathidasan College of Arts and Science organised `Freshers' Day' function recently.

The College Director (academic), Uma Arun, delivered the key-note address. The Principal, Prasanna Priyadharasini, spoke.

Awareness camp

A blood donation awareness camp was organised by the Oxford Engineering College under the aegis of its Youth Red Cross recently.

S. Radhakrishnan, a Laproscopic and Thoracic Surgeon, explained how the components of blood could be preserved for a lengthy duration.

Released

The Chennai-based Manimekalai Press and the Tiruchi-based Paalam, an NGO, have joined hands to release, `Jaipom Vaarungal' authored by a Kuwait-based philanthropist, N.C. Mohandass, here on Saturday.

The Tiruchi District Coordinator of Paalam, G. Subramanian, told presspersons here today that the author had contributed Rs. 38 lakhs since 1998 to service organisations and reputed educational trusts through Kuwait Frontliners, a service organisation he founded. Last year, Mr. Mohandass had contributed Rs. 5 lakhs to the Cancer Institute, Adyar.

Funds for bus stand

The Tamil Nadu Consumer Rights Council has thanked the State Government for announcing funds for construction of an integrated bus stand at Thevathanam in Tiruchi.

In a statement issued here today, its State president, N. Jamaludeen, thanked the Chief Minister for earmarking Rs.3.2 crore for construction of a link road from Thennur to Bharathidasan Road.

Mettur level

The level at the Mettur reservoir stood at 74.07 feet today. The inflow was 7,772 cusecs and the discharge was 1018 cusecs.
