MADURAI, AUG. 11. A photograph can explain what thousands of words cannot do. That is the power of photography, P. Selvaganesh, Joint Director, Income Tax, said here today. Speaking at the award distribution and inaugural function of a photographic salon organised by the Government Museum and the Madurai Photographic Council, he said the emotions captured in a photograph could be enjoyed even after several years. He said the uniqueness of photographers was that they captured emotions, which did not last even for a second. V. K. Melkani, Conservator of Forests, in his address, said photographers were natural artists blessed with a lot of emotions. Further, photographers also developed a sense of attachment to everything that they captured in their lenses, he said and felt that this helped them to bring out the best in the object focussed upon. N. Sulaiman, Assistant Director, Regional Centre for Art and Culture, said that photographs could be preserved as a record of several things that had gone into history. C. Thirumalai, Manager, Gandhi Museum, also spoke. P. Sam Sathiyaraj, Curator, Government Museum, welcomed the gathering and N. Ilangovan, president, MPC, proposed a vote of thanks. Prizes were distributed to winners of a photographic contest held earlier. The contest was divided into two sections, wedding and general. The prize-winning photographs are on display at the exhibition, which will go on till August 15. A free slideshow on marine photography is organised on all days during the exhibition from 6.30 to 7.30 p.m.
