Temperature

MADURAI, AUG. 11. The city today registered a maximum temperature of 39.4 degrees Celsius and a minimum of 26.5 degrees Celsius.

Man killed

M. Ramasamy (84), a lone inmate of the house at Surya Nagar, was killed this afternoon, after an attempt was made to burgle the house.

According to the police, the man died owing to suffocation after two youth had gagged his mouth.

In her complaint, the deceased's daughter-in-law, Krishnaveni, a lecturer in the Madurai Kamaraj University, said she saw two persons coming out when she entered the house.

However, no articles were found missing.

Prisoners recaptured

Two remand prisoners, who gave a slip to the escort police, were recaptured within few minutes near the Central Prison here this evening.

According to the police, four accused were being taken back to jail after they were produced in a court in Dindigul district. Two of them, P. Manimaran (25) and C. Gopiraja (30), both from A. Vellapatti near Melur, accused in a robbery case, suddenly took to heels when they were being taken afoot on the New Jail Road.

However, the escort police gave a hot chase and nabbed them near Kalavasal. The Karimedu police have registered a case.

Phone line disruption

The subscriber trunk dialling, international subscriber dialling, intelligence network, cellular and landline services between Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited and private operators will be affected for a short duration from the midnight of August 12, as the BSNL will undertake expansion work of equipment of Digital Trunk Automatic Exchange at Ellis Nagar, according to a release.

Grievance day

The Superintending Engineer, Madurai Electricity Distribution Circle, Tamil Nadu Electricity Board, will conduct a grievance day meeting for consumers of Madurai East Division at the Office of the Assistant Executive Engineer, South, Melur, at 11 a.m. tomorrow. Power consumers can air their grievances at the meeting.

Special counter

The Indian Bank has put up a special counter at the Thiagarajar College of Engineering, where counselling for engineering admissions are held, to facilitate students to get educational loans.

The special counter will accord spot (provisional) sanction of educational loans to eligible students covering tuition fees, exam fees, cost of books, hostel fees, etc., for the entire course with no margin money.

On the opening day of counselling on Tuesday, the bank sanctioned 15 loans aggregating Rs.24 lakhs to the students.

Results published

The first to sixth semester results of B.E. degree examinations, conducted by the Madurai Kamaraj University in April, have been published today.

According to a release issued by K. S. Gopalakrishnan, Controller of Examinations in-charge, students can access the results in the web site — www.webulagam.com — from tomorrow.

Celebrations

The SBOA Matriculation and Higher Secondary School at Nagamalai West celebrated its silver jubilee on August 6. The school students performed 25 variety entertainment programmes.

M. Suresh, Central Excise Commissioner, was the chief guest and M. P. Muralidharan, Deputy General Manager, State Bank of India, distributed merit awards.

The school founder-secretary, E. A. George Moses, honoured the staff members.
