Tumkur University merit lists

Bangalore Aug. 13. The merit lists for admission to the various post-graduate courses in Tumkur University, Tumkur, will be put up on the notice board of the university on August 20. Counselling for the various subjects will be conducted as follows: History, Commerce and Mathematics at 10 a.m. on August 25; supernumerary and payment seats for these subjects at 10 a.m. August 26; Kannada at 11.30 a.m. on August 25; supernumerary and payment seats at 11.30 a.m. on August 26. The classes for first semester post-graduate courses will commence on August 30.

Coffee growers form committee

MADIKERI Aug. 13. A coordination committee of coffee growers of South India has come into being. It comprises one representative each from every organisation involved in the coffee struggle from Karnataka, Kerala and Tamil Nadu, according to information received here on Friday. Krishna Kumar, one of the representatives from Kodagu, who attended a meeting convened by the All India Kisan Sabha at Kalpetta in Wayanad district of Kerala on August 8, said in a statement that any member could enrol for the new body. The president of the All India Kisan Sabha, Ramachandra Pillay, addressed the meeting. The Lok Sabha MP from Kerala, M.P. Veerendra Kumar, was elected the president of the coordination committee and P.M. Mohammad as its convenor, Mr. Krishna Kumar said. The move was aimed at bringing all coffee organisations under one roof.

`An exercise in futility'

BANGALORE AUG. 13. The former judge of the High Court of Karnataka, H.G. Balakrishna, on Friday said the imposition of capital punishment on Dhananjoy Chatterjee is "opposed to rational and modern thinking." In a statement, Mr. Balakrishna said neither the theory of deterrence nor the theory of retribution has made any impact on potential killers. "The Western experience and statistical data the world over is that capital punishment is an exercise in futility. The ends of justice would have been met by imposition of life sentence and not death penalty," he said.

Our relations cordial: Yediyurappa

HUBLI Aug. 13. B.S. Yediyurappa, Leader of the Opposition in the Legislative Assembly, on Friday offered to quit his post if any 10 legislators orally told him about their "lack of faith" in him. "I will quit within 24 hours; I would act on oral communication and would not insist on any written communication," Mr. Yediyurappa said while replying to questions from presspersons here. Mr. Yediyurappa said there was nothing like any dissidence in the party over his leadership and regarded the rumours doing the rounds in political circles as nothing but "a needless and a baseless hype." His relations with the State unit chief, H.N. Ananth Kumar, were cordial, Mr. Yediyurappa told a questioner.

MLA against `ban' on films

BANGALORE Aug. 13. H.D. Kumaraswamy, a film producer and an MLA, has objected to the demand for a "ban" on screening of non-Kannada films in the State for seven weeks after their release elsewhere. In a statement here on Friday, Mr. Kumaraswamy said the demand was meaningless as Kannada films in the State were getting 100 per cent exemption from entertainment tax and also subsidy. The producers could not make enough number of films to meet the requirement of all the cinemas in the State. The solution was in making Kannada films that were qualitatively better than non-Kannada films. This would ensure that people preferred Kannada films, he said.

I've explained my stand: Jerome

Bangalore Aug. 13. Jayakar Jerome, who has assumed charge as Secretary to Government in the new Department of Minorities, has said that he had explained his position to the senior officers in the Government with regard to the allegations levelled by the former Prime Minister, H.D. Deve Gowda, against the Bangalore Development Authority and him when he was its Commissioner. In an informal chat with presspersons here on Friday, Mr. Jerome refused to be dragged into the controversy. He, however, said that as a government officer, he would stick to the norms and was not ready to speak on the allegations made on the tendering process and other issues. Without mentioning the name of Mr. Deve Gowda, Mr. Jerome said he had read about the allegations on the website of a newspaper and also the reply given by the former Chief Minister, S.M. Krishna. "These people are speaking after three-and-a-half years. How can I shut their mouths? What answer I have to give, I have given," he said.

Officials face action

HASSAN AUG. 13. The president of the Hassan Zilla Panchayat, G.T. Indira, has directed the chief executive officer, M.O. Nagaraj, to initiate action against officials who failed to attend the District Development Committee meeting.

In a press release on Friday, Ms. Indira said that the purpose of conducting the meeting would be defeated if officials, who were expected to provide information, did not attend it.

Protest

HASSAN AUG. 13. Students staying in the hostel run by the Department of Social Welfare stormed the office of the department protesting against the decision to curtail the number of admission to the hostels, here on Friday.

The students, led by the district unit of the Students' Federation of India (SFI), raised slogans against the authorities and took out a procession to the office of the zilla panchayat, where the district in-charge and Minister for Public Works and Energy, H.D. Revanna, was receiving complaints from the public, and submitted a memorandum to him.

Mr. Revanna said that he would speak to the authorities concerned and make efforts to increase the intake in the hostels.

Objections

Bidar Aug. 13. Life members of the Kannada Sahitya Parishat have been asked to file objections, if any, to the voters' list for elections to the parishat's executive body, before August 20.

According to a press release, the list is available at the office of the Parishat at Muddnna Complex in Bidar.

Elections to the body will be held on October 31.

The Parishat also expressed its condolences over the death of the writer Shankar Mokashi Punekar, who passed away on August 11, another press release said.

MANGALORE Aug. 13. Chinmaya High School at Kadri here will organise a training programme for children in arts, music, crafts, and dance on Sunday.

Folk songs, origami, mime and mimicry and folk dance will be taught.

The course fee is Rs. 30 per student. For origami, Rs. 10 extra will be charged towards cost of material. Details can be had from the school.

Postal course

MANGALORE Aug. 13. The distance education programme of Mangalore University this year will be inaugurated on August 17.

The Vice-Chancellor of Karnatak University, Dharwad, M. Khajapeer, will inaugurate the programme. The Vice-Chancellor of Mangalore University, B. Hanumaiah, will preside over the function.

Dental care

Maranakatte Aug. 13. The Principal of A.B. Shetty Memorial Institute of Dental Sciences, N. Sridhar Shetty, said on Friday that the college had taken up an institutionalised approach of providing free oral and dental health care for rural and semi-urban people at the their doorstep.

He told presspersons here that more than four lakh people in the rural areas had benefited from this programme in the last 10 years.

Later, Mr. Shetty inaugurated a free dental camp at Maranakatte.

Electrocuted

SIRSI Aug. 13. <150> Maruti Keshav Gouda (22) of Kuruvante in Siddapur taluk was electrocuted on Thursday. He was carrying a bundle of leaves to his cattle shed. He was electrocuted when the wet bundle touched a live wire. The police and Mangalore Electricity Supply Company (MESCOM) officials visited the spot.

Belgaum Aug. 13. <150>The district received 45 mm rainfall in the week ending August 12. According to official sources, Athani taluk received 30.8 mm rainfall, Bailhongal 27.4, Belgaum 104, Chikkodi 30.6, Gokak 7.5, Hukkeri 24.2, Khanapur 197.9, Raibag 10, Ramdurg 8.6, and Saundatti 8.6 mm.

Health camp

Udupi Aug. 13. <150>T.M.A. Pai Hospital, Udupi, in association with the Varambally Gram Panchayat, Brahmavar Community Health Centre, Keonics Yuva.Com, and Handady Kumbragodu Cricketers' Association, will jointly organise a free diabetes and hypertension camp at Dharmavara Auditorium in Brahmavar on Sunday. In a press release here on Friday, the Chief Administrative Medical Officer, Parvati V. Bhat, said that free consultation, examination, and investigation facilities would be available at the camp. Interested persons had been urged to take advantage of the camp, the release said.

MBBS exams

MYSORE AUG. 13. The University of Mysore will conduct MBBS, BDS and B.Pharm degree examination from September 2004. A release said that the last date for payment of examination fee and submitting the application is September 6, and students of MBBS will be permitted to take Phase II and Phase III simultaneously. The release said that this would be the last examination of the University of Mysore for its old students/repeaters coming under medical faculty. Details could be had from the principals of the respective colleges.

Counselling

MYSORE AUG. 13. The Karnataka State Open University has arranged for Interactive Radio Counselling for students of English and Economics on August 22. A release said that R. Purnima, Professor, Department of Studies in English, would conduct counselling on Poetry I BA from 4 p.m., while S. Patriotic songs

MYSORE AUG. 13. Patriotic songs will be sung by Gayatri Prabhakar and group on August 15 as a part of the Udyanadalli Udayaraga programme. A release said that the group would perform at Jaware Gowda park, 10th Main, Saraswathipuram at 6 a.m.

MYSORE AUG. 13. The Department of Small Savings has collected Rs. 57.56 crores in the district through various small savings instruments, according to a release from the Deputy Director, R. Basavanna.

Protest march

CHAMARAJANAGAR AUG. 13. The president of Kannada Chaluvali Vatal Paksha and Chamarajanagar MLA, Vatal Nagaraj, has that said a protest march will organised on August 15 demanding that the Government provide sanitary facilities to the rural women in the State.

Inaugurating the "Janasamparka" meeting at Handrakalli Mole village in the taluk on Thursday, Mr. Nagaraj said that the march was being organised to draw the Government's attention to the plight of rural women.
