Hike in bus fare opposed

Udupi AUG. 13.AUG. 13.AUG. The district unit of the Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) on Friday criticised private bus owners for their demand for a 25 per cent increase in bus fare. In a press release issued here, the secretary of the unit, Chandrashekhar V., said the current bus fare was high and any further increase would amount to "robbery". The Regional Transport Authority (RTA) gave permission for a 10 per cent increase in bus fare on December 12, 2002. But it was reduced by 2.5 per cent due to protests. Though it was decided to charge Rs. 23 a ticket from Udupi to Mangalore, the bus operators were charging Rs. 25. They should follow the fare charged by the Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC), he said.

Woman stabbed to death

TUMKUR AUG. 13.AUG. 13.AUG. A man allegedly stabbed his wife to death at Pavagada on Friday. The police said Gangamma (23), a domestic help, was returning home from work at Bovi Colony when her husband, Marappa, attacked her with a dagger. She died on the spot. Marappa was absconding. The police said Marappa married Gangamma seven years ago and they had two children. Investigation is on.

Body found

Gulbarga AUG. 13.AUG. 13.AUG. The body of a man was found at Tegnur on the outskirts of Gulbarga on Friday. The police said the body was partially burnt. They suspect that the man might have been murdered and the body set on fire. A case has been registered.

Watchman crushed to death

Gulbarga AUG. 13.AUG. 13.AUG. A watchman of a shop was crushed to death when bags containing foodgrains fell on him while he was sleeping on Friday. The police gave the name of the victim as Nanasaheb Gowda Kobal (22). A case has been registered. Meanwhile, the Gunj Labourers' Welfare Association has sought a compensation of Rs. 50,000 for the family of Kobal.

Sharada Hangal dead

DHARWAD AUG. 13.AUG. 13.AUG. Sharada Hangal (79), an exponent of the Jaipur gharana of Hindustani classical music and a relative of Gangubai Hangal, died here on Thursday. Sharada Hangal was the founder principal of the University College of Music of Karnatak University. A recipient of the State award, she also served as a member of the Syndicate of Karnatak University.

34 villages facing water crisis

Kolar AUG. 13.AUG. 13.AUG. Thirty-four villages in Gudibanda taluk are facing a shortage of drinking water. This was disclosed at a meeting held here on Thursday under the Karnataka Development Programme. The Executive Officer of the Gudibanda Taluk Panchayat said steps had been taken to supply water to the affected villages. Water was being supplied through tankers. He said Rs. 11.40 lakhs released by the Kolar Zilla Panchayat to tackle the drinking water problem had been spent. He sought additional funds for the purpose. The zilla panchayat President, K.V. Narayanaswamy, told the officials to take steps to tackle the drinking water crisis. He urged them to speed up work on the projects taken up under the Ganga Kalyan Scheme.
