Lawyers' strike

Sir, — This refers to the editorial, "Resolve the issues" (Aug. 23). The purpose of inaugurating the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court is to benefit the litigants of Tiruchi, Karur and Perambalur. It is true that lawyers will have to part with a few cases. But this does not justify the manhandling of litigants and other lawyers, or grabbing the robes of their colleagues or deflating the wheels of police vans.

If defining a code of conduct is an infringement of the right of lawyers, how are the lawyers right in depriving the others of their right to discharge their duty?

A.G. Akber Sheriff,
Tiruchi, T.N.

Sir, — It was government employees and teachers yesterday. It is lawyers today. Ours is a vibrant and kicking nascent democracy indeed.

G. Jagannathan,
Dharmapuri, T.N.
