1 lakh stolen from insurance branch

NELLORE: Mystery shrouds the reported theft of Rs.1,04,764.50 from the Dargamitta branch of United India Insurance Company (UIIC) here on Tuesday. The Inspector (crime investigation), Abraham, said apart from cash, cheques relating to premium, for Rs. 90,000 and some cheque books were also found missing from the almirah. The theft on the busy highway is the talk of the town. In the same building, housing the UII office, a nationalised bank branch is also located.

TTD told to pay EPF amount

HYDERABAD: A. Gopal Reddy, a Judge of the High Court, on Tuesday directed the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) to pay half of the amount demanded by the authorities of the Employment Provident Fund (EPF) Department and then go for appeal as provided under the rules. The Judge was passing the order in a writ petition filed by the TTD. The EPF authorities directed the TTD to pay Rs. 17 lakhs towards contribution for volunteers working in the Nitya Annadanam scheme. The TTD, however, contended that all employees of the TTD were covered under the General Provident Fund scheme and the Nitya Annadanam Scheme was not notified as canteen. But the Judge was not inclined to grant stay.

63,000 ganja plants destroyed

NIZAMABAD: Excise and Prohibition personnel led by the Assistant Commissioner (Enforcement), M.K. Devendra Prasad, raided an agriculture field in survey no. 29/A on the outskirts of Muthakunta in Nizamabad mandal and destroyed 63,000 ganja plants. Officials have put the value of the destroyed plants at Rs.1 crore. A case has been filed against the ganja cultivator, Ramavath Sardar of Malkapur tanda.

Exam to fill posts postponed

HYDERABAD: The preliminary written examination scheduled to be held on August 29 to fill backlog vacancies of Scheduled Castes/Tribes in group `D' posts in the South Central Railway under special recruitment drive has been postponed due to administrative reasons. The fresh date will be notified in due course. Candidates can appear for the examination on the same call letters sent to them, according to a press release here.

Pact with Aga Khan Education

HYDERABAD: The State Education Department and the Aga Khan Education Service (AKES), India, have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) paving the way for dissemination of the AKES whole school-based approach to primary schools of Maheswaram mandal and Warangal urban east district.

According to an official release, I.V. Subba Rao, Principal Secretary, School Education, Manohar Prasad, State Project Director, DPEP, and Veerabhadra Reddy, Assistant State Project Director, signed the MoU on August 20 in the office of the Director, School Education here. The AKES was represented by Dayaram, Programme Officer, Mallik Kotadia, CEO, Mallika Sen, head of schools, Maritta Eshwaran, programme officer, and Naidu, education officer.

Python released into jungle

VISAKHAPATNAM: A nine-feet long female python, which was found on the premises of a stores of the Visakhapatnam Port Trust (VPT) on Monday, was released into the forest area of Simhachalam on Tuesday. Green Mercy, a voluntary organisation, received the python from the VPT authorities, treated the minor injuries it suffered when it got entangled in a nylon net and released it into the jungle, the chief executive of the organisation, Ramana Murthy, said.

Two farmers end lives

ANANTAPUR: The spate of farmers committing suicide due to debt burden is continuing in the district. Ramachandra Reddy (45) of Thupalle in Gandlapenta mandal consumed pesticide late on Monday night and succumbed on way to the hospital. The farmer had five acres of land and Rs. 2.6 lakhs of debt piled up due to successive failure of crop in the last four years. K. Pedda Dastagiri (45) consumed pesticide at Narpala to end his life. The farmer with two acres of land had Rs. 2 lakhs debts.

Farm connections move flayed

HYDERABAD: The Lok Janshakti Party has criticised the Government's decision to weed out 3.5 lakh unauthorised power connections of farmers. S. Jagadish, State unit president, in a statement here on Tuesday asked the Government to give up its attempt to disconnect power supply to farmers in the name of illegal connections. J. Damodar Rao, president, State unit of the Bharatiya Kisan Sangh, warned of an agitation on the issue. In a statement, he criticised industrialists for indulging in a `propaganda' that the Government would go bankrupt if it extended relief to farmers.

YSR's assurance to TV artistes

HYDERABAD: The Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, has assured consideration of the plea of members of the TV Industry Welfare Association to provide housing facilities to them on the lines of Filmnagar here. A delegation of the association called on Dr. Reddy and submitted a representation seeking to develop TV Nagar on the lines of Filmnagar. Television artistes -- G.L. Srinivas and Kota Shankar Rao -- and others met the Chief Minister, according to an official release.

Ramayana meet concludes

TIRUPATI: The three-day 20th International Ramayana Conference concluded here on Tuesday with a call that Srimad Ramayana must become the beacon for world nations and its populace to extricate themselves from the morass of mundane life. A large number of delegates from all over the country and some from countries like France, Hungary, South Africa, Zambia, Thailand, Indonesia, Britain, Malaysia and the Netherlands participated in the meet and presented papers.

The valedictory address was given by Telugu litterateur and retired IAS officer, Venkatasivaiah.

Legal literacy camp

CUDDAPAH: A legal literacy camp will be held at Obulampalle village in Chennur mandal on August 28, said the Secretary of District Legal Services Authority and Senior Civil Judge, P. Lakshminarayana, on Tuesday. Advocates, revenue and police officials would participate, he said in a statement.

Loans disbursed

CUDDAPAH: The Cuddapah MLA, Md. Ahmedullah and the Rayalaseema Grameena Bank Chairman, M. Obulesu, on Tuesday disbursed loans to the tune of Rs. 11 lakhs to 35 vegetable vendors whose shops in the old market here were gutted last week.

Boy falls from train, loses legs

NELLORE: A 14-year old boy eking out a living by seeking alms in moving trains, lost his legs after an accidental fall from a train near Vedayapalem railway gate, at Bhaktavastala Nagar of Nellore town, on Tuesday. He was rushed to the hospital by railway police officials.

BMS stages dharna

NELLORE: Functionaries of Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh (BMS) staged a dharna near Gandhi statue on Tuesday, protesting against the alleged failure of the Central Government in various sectors. The BMS expressed concern over sharp increase in prices of essential commodities and demanded payment of 12.50 per cent interest on provident fund.

Ex-gratia granted

CUDDAPAH: The kin of 19 poor persons who died in different forms of accidents during 2003-04 were granted ex-gratia of Rs. 9.50 lakhs under Apatbandhu Accident Insurance Scheme, according to the Collector, Jayesh Ranjan. The families of the deceased were sanctioned Rs. 50,000 each, he said in a statement on Tuesday.

Philately expo

TIRUPATI: The Postal Department is conducting a district-level philatelic exhibition at Tirupati from September 3 to 5. In this connection, a workshop by the noted philatelist, B.K. Nagpal of Hyderabad, will be held at the office of K. Chandrasekhar, the Superintendent of Post Offices, Tirupati on August 26.

Rector visits PG centre

KURNOOL: Basha Mohiddin, Rector of Sri Krishnadevaraya University, who is also the designated pro-Vice-Chancellor, visited the Post Graduate Centre here on Tuesday. He addressed students on personality development. The staff of the PG Centre apprised him problems in the centre. The pro-Vice-Chancellor responded positively for construction of a seminar hall.
