HYDERABAD, SEPT. 3. The BJP has announced that its Kisan Morcha (Farmers' Front) will hold a dharna outside the Vidyut Soudha at Khairatabad on Saturday to demand an end to power disconnections to weavers and farmers, nine hours assured power supply to rural areas and a 50 per cent discount on power bills for weavers. The demonstrators will gather at Lakdi-ka-Pul at 11 am and proceed to the Vidyut Soudha in a rally. Addressing a press conference here on Friday, the State BJP general secretary, K. Laxman, said that 16 weavers had committed suicide in the past few weeks due to worsening economic conditions and neglect by the Government.
Power disconnected
He said that a Kisan Morcha delegation, which visited Karimnagar district, where four members of a weaver's family committed suicide recently, found that power connection had been disconnected to over 600 weavers leaving them without any means of livelihood. He reminded the Congress of its election promise of a Rs. 250 crore package for weavers and wondered why it had not yet been implemented. The State BJP vice president, Baddam Bal Reddy, criticised the State Ministers, Mohd. Ali Shabbir and Mohd. Fareeduddin, for representing the MIM demands regarding the suspected LeT militants to the Government. He said that rather than acting as Ministers of the State Government they were acting as representatives of a particular community and lending support to terrorists.
Criticises Government
He criticised the Government for ordering a CID enquiry into the arrests as this would "demoralise" the police force. He added that the MIM had supported terrorists by demanding the release of the arrested militants and wanted the CBI to investigate the MIM's role in "supporting" terrorists. He reiterated the BJP demand for arresting all the suspected LeT operatives, as well as MIM MLA Akbaruddin Owaisi, under POTA.
