TIRUPATI, SEPT. 3. The Income Tax Department plans to present a positive balance sheet this year by collecting the piled up arrears with the help of a special drive. ``This is precisely why our targeted hike in collections has been pegged at 33 per cent against the usual 20 per cent,'' pointed out P.A.Chowdary, the Chief Commissioner of Income Tax, Hyderabad, adding that the whip would be cracked only on errants and the prompt payers need not panic about any additional burden.
Post-budget target
Addressing a media conference here on Friday, Mr. Chowdary said that against the interim target of Rs.4,611 crore, the post-budget target for collections had been fixed 33 per cent higher at Rs.5,098 crore. In this connection, he wanted his officials to lay stress on encouraging voluntary compliance by assesses. Regarding convenience, the On-Line Tax Accounting System (OLTAS) launched in June last was aimed at doing away with the reams of paper used for filing tax returns, he said, advising assesses to demand the banks to include the mandatory Identification Number. More offices at Tuni, Tadepalligudem, Vikarabad, Adilabad and Suryapet would add to the existing 44 in the State, which would become operational in a month's time.
Guesthouse
Earlier, Mr. Chowdary laid a foundation stone for the Rs.67.2 lakh I-T guesthouse on Hare Krishna road in Alipiri here. A 1000 sq. yards of land was provided by the TTD on a 30 year lease. Despite exerting pressure at the top level, the I-T department could not secure a site on Tirumala from the TTD because of the latter's blanket ban on heavy construction in future. Speaking on the policy to decongest the hill town, the TTD's executive officer, Ajeya Kallam, projected the brighter side by explaining the advantages of staying downhill. Mr. Chowdary and Mr.Kallam later went through the blueprint prepared by Central Public Works Department (CPWD) for the project, where the picturesque Tirumala hills provide the backdrop. P.K.Sinha (Hyderabad-II), B.P.Sah (Hyderabad-III), V.S.Wahi (Visakhapatnam) -all CCITs, Director-General IT (Inv) J.G.Pendse and CIT (Tirupati), S.K.Mohanty were among those present.
