Land project to benefit two lakh families

By Ravi Reddy

HYDERABAD, SEPT. 3. The Comprehensive Land Development Project (CLDP), scheduled to be launched on November 19, is expected to cover 3.50 lakh acres of assigned lands and lands owned by over 2 lakh poor families in the rural areas.

The ambitious Rs. 500-crore project aims at providing a livelihood option centred around development of compact blocks of farm lands owned by the poor. It will help individuals develop their unproductive lands.

Livelihood too

The Minister for Rural Development, D. Srinivas, told The Hindu on Friday that the earlier experiments of providing land to the poor had not achieved the desired results as the beneficiaries had left the lands fallow. But, the CLDP intends not only to develop the land but also provide sustainable livelihood to the beneficiaries. The Government had asked all district Collectors to complete the land identification work by October-end. Twenty to 25 blocks would be identified in each district.

Salient features

Explaining the salient features of the CLDP, Mr. Srinivas said the three-year project is funded by NABARD. Ninety per cent of the cost would be as grant and remaining 10 per cent, in the form of labour from the beneficiaries. Funds allocated to each district would be channelised through the District Water Management Agency (DWMA), which in turn would allot it to village organisations.
