KOCHI, SEPT. 3. A Malaysian team, which arrived in Kochi today to identify a spot for setting up the proposed marina, has evinced interest in three acres of land that was reclaimed by the Goshree Islands Development Authority (GIDA). "The land falls in between the islands of Mulavukad and Vallarpadom. The team led by the CMD of Trans Resource Corporation (TRC), Malaysia, Sufi Mohammed Zain, had as members the company's executive director, Abdul Aziz Mohammed, architect, and five others," said K. V. Mohankumar, the MD in charge of Tourist Resorts Kerala Limited (TRKL), a joint-venture between the State Government and Taj Group of Hotels. In the coming days, the TRC officials will hold discussions with bankers and the Tourism Secretary, T. Balakrishnan. The preliminary cost of the marina project is scheduled to be Rs. 24 crores, of which the Centre has already sanctioned Rs. 4 crores. The total project cost has been estimated at Rs. 50 crores. The Malaysian company will have a project share of 74 per cent and the TRK, 26 per cent. The project is expected to be a major foreign-exchange earner for the country, with the facility to berth dozens of vessels at a time.
