CPI(M) opposes new fee structure

By Our Special Correspondent

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, SEPT. 3. The CPI(M) State secretariat has strongly criticised the Government decision to levy higher fees from merit quota students in State-run self-financing professional colleges.

In a statement here today, the CPI(M) State secretariat pointed out that the decision violated the Antony Government's assurance to students that merit quota students would be required to pay only lower fees.

Hopes dashed

Thus, engineering students who had hoped to pay Rs. 6,200 annually would now be required to pay Rs. 38,700 annually, the CPI(M) leadership said.

The CPI(M) secretariat said the decision would also hurt the interests of SC/ST students as they would have to pay the higher fees initially and get the amount reimbursed later.

Those who are unable to raise the money would lose the opportunity to go in for higher professional education.

The decision also showed that the Oommen Chandy Government was not sincere about implementing the law enacted recently to ensure that only fees payable in Government institutions would be realised from the 50 per cent merit quota students.
