Open University to give spot admissions

By Our Staff Reporter

VELLORE, SEPT. 6. The Tamil Nadu Open University (TNOU) will provide spot admissions at its training and examination centre — Dhanabagyam Krishnaswamy Mudaliar (DKM) College for Women — here on September 18 and 19, the Vice-Chancellor, M.S. Palanichamy, said today.

Intending candidates could send their applications, along with fees, either directly to the counselling centre or through the 29 information centres of the university in Vellore and Tiruvannamalai districts. The last date for submitting the applications has been extended up to September 30, the Vice-Chancellor told newspersons here. The university has started 13 new courses including M.A. in all branches.

The 34 counselling and study centres in the State, 11 were exclusively study centres. Ten more study centres were sanctioned for the current year.

The DKM College was selected as a training and examination centre, and the university was trying to convert it into a study centre as well. This year satellite downlinking facilities would be provided to the college along with four other institutions in the State. This would enable the college to downlink Education Satellite (Edusat) programmes once the Indian Space Research Organisation launched this month. Five colleges were provided the facility last year.

The TNOU proposed to offer B.Ed. from this year in five study centres — two in Chennai and one each in Madurai, Tirunelveli and Gandhigram. A joint committee of the Distance Education Council and the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) inspected five study centres, where the B.Ed. programme was offered. The university has completed its inspection. The university would publish the results of the first semester MBA examination and the certificate course examinations before September 20.
