TIRUCHI, SEPT. 6. Only 30 per cent of the Rs. 100 crore-University Grants Commission (UGC) allotment to its South Eastern Regional Office (SERO) for college development, has been utilised during the Ninth Plan Period, said S. Jelani, head, SERO. Further grants would be released after 50 colleges in Tamil Nadu, 70 from Andhra Pradesh and 10 from Pondicherry settled their accounts and furnished the fund utilisation certificates, he said at the `UGC - Affiliated Colleges Interface Meeting' at the Bharathidasan University, recently. There were 300 colleges in these States. He promised UGC grants for construction of ladies hostels in colleges at an outlay of Rs. 25 lakhs. As part of the faculty improvement programme, 200 additional teachers were to be awarded Fellowships soon, Mr. Jelani said. As per the new UGC guidelines, 20 percent of the staff was eligible for deputation to conduct M. Phil and Ph. D programmes. Colleges could still avail themselves of the grants by downloading application forms from the UGC website and submitting them before the second week of September, he said. The Minor Research Project amount for individual teachers had been raised from Rs. 50,000 to 1 lakh and the last date for submission of applications was September 30, he said. Autonomous colleges would get Rs. 12 lakh per year for college development. The Vice-Chancellor, Bharthidasan University, C. Thangamuthu, urged colleges to settle their accounts to receive the Tenth plan grants and requested them to get accreditation from the National Assessment and Accreditation Council.
